Remote Education Provision: Information for Parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to children and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

For details of what to expect where individual children are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The Remote Curriculum: what is taught to children at home

A child’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

For children that are sent home, additional reading books and resources to support home learning will be sent home. On the first day of remote education, we will contact you to let you know the arrangements for remote education. For children in K.S.1., we will email instructions of the time your child should be online (on Google Classroom) to receive instructions about learning for the day. Learning instructions, teacher videos and supporting resources will also be posted on ClassDojo to enable continue access. If hard copies of learning are required, we will organise distribution of these on the first day.

Children in Reception and K.S.1 will all have access to IXL maths, IXL English and Lexia Core 5 Reading immediately. They will also have an age-appropriate reading book.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

Yes, we will teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we will need to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, if we an art outcome would be impractical to do at home, we will refine this giving consideration to the resources you may have available to you. The same may be true of subjects like science. We will endeavour to continue to teach core knowledge but this will be through other resources, such as BBC Bitesize.

Remote Teaching and Expectations of Daily Learning

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

All children have logins and passwords for ClassDojo and Google Classroom – which will be used to support live sessions through the platform Google Meet -  and have been shown how to access these resources in school. Any children new to school are assigned their logins for these platforms when they join the school. All other children have been provided with their logins. If your child has forgotten the password (or passwords to IXL or Lexia), please email the school office to seek assistance info@ebbsfleetgreenprimaryschool.org.uk

Similarly, if you are having technical issues or require a Chrome book, please let us know.

All children in nursery have access to ClassDojo and they will be provided with remote learning through this online portal. Please email us if you need any support with this. 

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

Please email us if you require further information on any aspect of digital or online access to learning.  We have a range of ways to support your child getting online.

In addition, we are happy to produce paper learning packs to supplement this learning.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

We are combining a mixture of live and recorded teaching. We believe that live teaching will enable teachers to instruct clearly and check children’s understanding as well as benefiting wellbeing. We know that recorded teaching can be watched repeatedly and this will help to secure children’s understanding so we are also utilising videos. Recorded teaching will include other sources such as BBC Bitesize and Oak Academy.  We are keen to pull on a range of expertise to ensure a fully comprehensive offer.

We are also offering printed paper learning packs to any child who requires one.  These can supplement online learning.

We also encourage parents, carers and children to look at our curriculum maps (these can be found on our website) for further ideas, including online research and project work. There are also questions and quizzes to make them think about what they are learning and remember it!

To support well-being and provide a sense of togetherness, there will be a weekly Google Meet session for the children to come together as a wider community, sharing their thoughts and feelings with others.

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We know it is incredibly challenging for parents and carers who are juggling many different roles and may have more than one child working remotely.

We expect that all children working remotely will be online at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. to receive instruction from the teacher. Registers will be taken at these times. We expect them to complete tasks and share them for feedback and this will be clearly explained by the teacher. For the completion of tasks, in most cases, children should be working independently but the teacher will be online to respond to questions throughout the day.

We expect parents and carers to support us by creating an environment suitable for learning (T.V. switched off, no distractions etc.) and to keep us informed if they need anything from us, however, small. Leadership will be in school everyday to respond to queries.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Teachers will monitor the attendance and engagement of the children in their classes. They will also be checking the accuracy and quality of the work children have produced and giving feedback.

If there are any concerns, the teacher or a member of the leadership team will contact you directly. If your child meets the vulnerable criteria, we will request they return to school.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback will take place in many forms with some digital marking, verbal feedback to the whole class (or individuals within it) or written comments.

Feedback may be given to all learning but not all of it will be written feedback; this is not feasible as teachers are spending additional hours sourcing online learning and recording sections of lessons.


As the children are younger, we are aware that examples of work will be uploaded by parents and may typically be more practical activities with less recording. Video recordings and photographs can all be added to the children’s individual portfolios on ClassDojo. When parents upload work, we will respond with a positive comment or question to challenge. We encourage parents to message us if they need help or additional ideas to challenge their children. We message parents privately when we notice a misconception and direct them to the teaching point. We are able to offer individual support when needed and each class teacher calls home once a week to discuss how the children are accessing the learning.


All of the children are able to upload their learning to their individual portfolio on ClassDojo in the form of photographs, videos and document attachments (e.g. Microsoft word, notes, pages etc.). When the learning is uploaded, feedback will be given by the class teacher. This will be a comment, support, encouragement or an extension for those children who have demonstrated a secure understanding of the learning. Additional support or guidance will be given where errors have been made to guide them which may include direction to review the pre-recorded lesson for that day. During the live sessions, the class teacher will also provide additional modelled examples to both support and extend the children’s learning. We are able to offer individual support when needed and each class teacher calls home once a week to discuss how the children are accessing the learning.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • Regular contact from our SEND team. This will include telephone calls, hang-outs and emails;
  • Virtual sessions with specialist teachers and support staff;
  • Learning packs.

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

If your child is well enough to work, we will organise learning packs to be delivered to your home. We can also offer live lessons filming the teacher in class.

The children will still have access to all online platforms and additional learning websites that they use in school and will be able to continue using those at home.
